The publication of the volume entitled The Affective Core Self: The Role of the Unconscious and Retroactivity in Self-Constitution was funded by the János Bolyai Scholarship of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (BO/00189/21/2) and by the No. K 138745 project of the Hungarian Scientific Research Fund.
Dr. Horváth Lajos’s book complements the concept of the phenomenological unconscious with psychoanalytic ideas and expands upon the concept of the minimal self by introducing the affective core self. The volume also contributes to the philosophical debates surrounding the self by situating the affective core self between the minimal self and the narrative self. Through the comparative analysis of the phenomenological and psychoanalytic unconscious, the author emphasizes the role of the unconscious in the constitution of the affective core self. The volume demonstrates, by means of comparative analyses, the convergence between Freud's retroactive trauma and the phenomenology of retroactivity. The book concludes that retroactive sense-bestowing is a two-tiered phenomenon and distinguishes between implicit-bodily and conscious-narrative retroactive constitution of meaning. In order to introduce the implicit-bodily meaning-bestowing process, the book also draws on studies on the nature of body memory. In conclusion, the book states that the affective core self emerges through two-tiered retroactive meaning-bestowing processes. The volume appeals to students and researchers interested in phenomenology and philosophy of mind.
